Conversation Partner Etiquette

  • Be sure to communicate promptly and clearly with your partner.
  • Be prepared by having a list of questions to discuss each time you meet. (Don't expect your conversation partner to lead the discussion)
  • Be genuinely interested-they can tell when you are just going through the motions.
  • Keep in mind that their language skills and culture may cause an unintended barrier. Don't be afraid to follow up if you don't hear back.
  • Respond promptly when they reach out to you or respond-acknowledge every attempt from them to communicate.
  • Be friendly and respect their schedule - remember they are volunteering their time.
  • Find out what they like to do and schedule activites that will be enjoyable for them.
  • Make this a fun time for both you and your partner.  We want them to participate in the program with other students.
  • Show appreciation and thank them for their time
